Legacies & NonProfits: Speaking Up for CALM
Breaking the silence of child abuse.
Story by Nancy A. Shobe
It was Gabriela’s* boyfriend, John*, in high school, who first noticed her extreme anxiety. When he would kiss her, Gabriela would become anxious, her anxiety eventually turning into flashbacks. John became concerned and asked her about it.
Gabriela decided as a young girl not to remember being sexually abused by an uncle during a family holiday party. Over the years, she had silenced her voice and quelled her anxiety through alcohol and marijuana use. It wasn’t until she became physical with John that the memories resurfaced.

CALM At Heart - Healing Through Art
CALM hosts artful event and showcases original collection of artwork
In conjunction with this special event, and to reinforce the powerful theme of healing through art, CALM called upon the local art community to submit artwork to be considered for an exclusive collection curated by a jury of CALM At Heart committee members, Ro Snell Sanders, Tom Stanley, and Paul Guido. Thanks to the generosity of Frank Goss, and the Sullivan Goss Gallery, the CALM At Heart collection will be unveiled on January 3rd at a First Thursday event at Arts & Letters Café, and will remain on display on the walls of the restaurant until the event on the 18th. The collection will then be displayed at the CALM At Heart event, where it will ultimately be auctioned. The collection consists of 20 pieces, and can also be viewed online in a virtual gallery. The collective theme for the artists was their interpretation of art as healing, and how it relates to the vital work that CALM does to help heal victims of abuse and neglect.
